In your example: Jonh would never run again because he was lost his leg. It sound kind of awkward. John would never run again because he had lost his leg. John would neve run again because he lost his leg. If you use " was" then shoudn't it be " was losing his leg" sound better. I am not saying that your are wrong, but " was lost his leg just doesn't sound right!. If you could provide an explanation regarding the choice of word of using " was lost" promptly, I will buy this book!
