《禮記》之文，大都博達雅麗。〈冠義〉……諸篇，則序跋文之正宗也；〈投壺〉……諸篇，則典志文之正宗也；〈曲禮〉……諸篇，則雜記文之正宗也；〈禮運〉……諸篇，則論著文之正宗也。昔北齊顏黃門之推著《顏氏家訓》，其〈文章篇〉有云：「祭祀哀誄，生於《禮》者也。」……然則哀誄箴銘之文，亦以《禮記》為正宗矣。世人學文詞，徒知求之於《尚書》、《毛詩》及《左氏》，而不知《禮記》之文，尤不可及。……況乎〈大學〉、〈中庸〉、〈禮運〉、〈樂記〉、〈儒行〉〈學記〉諸篇，義理之宏深，文詞之粹美，他經罕有其比。此其所以江河長流，萬古不廢也。本書上冊包含導論以及曲禮上、曲禮下、檀弓上、檀弓下、王制、月令、禮運、內則等篇的節選的闡釋。
