Though this is 'Published 1872' it seems to have been finished at least ten years earlier. They've just fired on Fort Sumter! Thus it has a very curious perspective on American history, heavily weighted to General Scott's successes in Mexico. Andrew Jackson is the great titan of modern Presidents; his historical reputation today (I mean 20120 has remained pretty much as it stood at the eve of the Civil War, preserved in amber forevermore because henceforth there were so many other personages and controversies to review.
