The history is written in the 19th-century flourishes of its time, bypassing and ignoring any self-criticism, for instance, no mention of Confederate sympathies during the Civil War, and only the most superficial coverage of the religious wars of the 17th & early 18th century. It's also almost entirely about white people: Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad fail to garnish any mention in this book, despite being written in 1902.

Learned a lot about my ancestors here. Great story about my great great great grandmother Lovey Lake saving her father Captain Henry Lake from arrest by British soldiers in 1776. Full of information for genealogists.

Only briefly mentioned my ancestors the Brinsfield family. I know they were an important import/export and farming family.
