Needed an English Touch — I had a hard time reading this book. So much so that I didn’t get very far at all. What was the problem? It would appear that the author is a native Spanish speaker. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that… provided that when she publishes a story in English, it should be copyedited or at least vetted by a native English speaker. Not only was the writing awkward and stilted—especially the dialogue—but the dialogue was punctuated as it is in Spanish with dashes, not as it is across the English-speaking world, with quotation marks. At first, I was trying to puzzle out what all these dashes meant… then I remembered from my study of Spanish. I still kept trying to read, knowing what they signified, but I could not keep doing so as I simply found it too distracting. These oddities may not bother some readers, but it was too much for me. — I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
