About this ebook

NAMED AS ONE OF THE BBC'S 100 MOST INSPIRING NOVELS

'It was octarine, the colour of magic. It was alive and glowing and vibrant and it was the undisputed pigment of the imagination . . .'

Somewhere between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a magical world not totally unlike our own. Except for the fact that it travels through space on the shoulders of four giant elephants who in turn stand on the shell of an astronomically huge star turtle, of course.

Rincewind is the world's worst wizard who has just been handed a very important job: to look after the world's first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. Unfortunately, their journey across the Disc includes facing robbers, monsters, mercenaries, and Death himself.

And the whole thing's just a game of the gods that might send them over the edge . . .

'If you've never read a Discworld novel, what's the matter with you?' Guardian

'Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own' The Times

The Colour of Magic is the first book in the Wizards series, but you can read the Discworld novels in any order.

I have lost count of the number of times I have read this book over the years but I still love it. Taken on it's own it remains three fantastic parodies and a wonderful final work. However it is also worth reading for the world it introduced. The Diskworld has evolved over the years but the roots of it exist here. Though Mr Pratchett's later novels are slicker and more accomplished this is the place to start. Welcome to the Diskworld. Just don't drink the water.

I've reread Colour of Magic for the first time in 25 years. Terry Pratchett is my all time favourite author and this was my introduction to his body of work. The book follows Rincewind the wizzard and Twoflower the tourist as they lurch from disaster to disaster all over the discworld........

It was the first but not the least by any measure. My introduction into discworld was with men at arms, and I'm glad to have come back to read this all these years later. Sir Terry had a grand gift for storytelling from this very first book. If this is your first adventure on the disc, rejoice in the fact that it never loses its magic, and the residents will bring you back time and time again.

Terry Pratchett was the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series, the first of which, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983. In all, he was the author of over fifty bestselling books which have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. His novels have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal.
