“Deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original.” —The New York Times

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

The concept and premise is extremely unique: to blend sci-fi, horror, and fantasy that felt original. Too bad it was hard to follow at times with how poorly it was written. The main setting can be confusing to navigate and follow. The distinct writing style seems unnecessary to tell the story (used both by the characters and narration) but it does give this author her voice. I stuck with the story to the end. The characters grew on me, liked how the story ended, and will be picking up the 2nd book. I felt the emotions the author conveyed, and found the theme fitting. I will say this is nothing that I've ever read so if you're looking for something different (and can overlook the flaws) give it a shot.

I was recommended this book and I absolutely feel the need to pass on the recommendation. I loved spending most of the book in a similar vein as the main character, being kept away from secrets or having to try and figure out what those secrets were. The intrigue, the world building and lore feel can be hard to grip at times yet I feel the payoff is more than enough.

Not great for me. Writing was at times poetic only to be followed by pages sophmoric phrasing as if the author only had a 6 page thesaurus. Characters so one dimensional it became predictable...esp the lead character who was hard to empathize with even after knowing her background.
