Im Jahr 1940 beschlagnahmte die von Heinrich Himmler geführte „Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle“ in großem Umfang Gebäude, vor allem aus kirchlichem Besitz, um darin Umsiedlungslager einzurichten. Aus dieser als „Himmlers Klostersturm“ bekannt gewordenen Aktion entwickelte sich rasch ein dauerhaftes Lagersystem von rund 800 Lagern mit immer neuen Belegungen. Der Lagertyp Umsiedlungslager wird am Beispiel des Gaus Württemberg-Hohenzollern umfassend dargestellt. Die Untersuchung erhellt ein bisher unbeachtetes Strukturelement des riesigen Netzwerks nationalsozialistischer Lager.
