If you want to really understand the truth of a book - Never watch the movie. Read the book first - Not last. Slavery was/is a horrific trait of mankind wanting to believe they rise above others in a godly fashion. They will never understand that they will have to answer for their arrogance to God Our Father and Our Lord Jesus Christ. Hopefully they will beg for mercy for their crimes against humanity. We are ALL children of God.. No One is better than the other. Richer maybe but not better than.

I was surprised at how easily I was able to read this book. I thought the antiquated language would immediately turn me off, but instead I was almost instantly sucked in. Solomon Northup had a habit of going into vivid detail about the things readers might not care about (like the planting and harvesting of sugar cane and cotton), but when he described the horrors of life as a slave, I was disgusted, saddened, and overjoyed that slavery in the United States doesn't exist in the same capacity as it did.

As always this book gives more than the film, sometimes hard to read but just as important as books such as Anne Franks diary. There is an occasional feeling of the author painting himself in a good light and solely virtuous but that may well be due to the times it was first penned in. Despite this small distraction a this remains a worthwhile read.
