Quelques temps avant sa mort, Jacques Lacan résumait sa vie au service de la psychanalyse en ces termes : "Je suis un traumatisé du malentendu. Comme je ne m'y fais pas, je me fatigue à le dissoudre. Et du coup, je le nourris." Il faisait notamment allusion au "mal-entendu" qui avait accueilli sa dernière théorisation, celle qu'il a transmise dans son enseignement sous la forme du nouage borroméen des registres du Réel, du Symbolique et de l'Imaginaire, véritable énigme testamentaire léguée à la psychanalyse.
