About the author

Sangbok Kim graduated with a BA degree in English Language and Literature from Korea University. After working as a professor of English for Tourism at Changwon Moonsung University in South Korea, he resumed linguistics study in the United States. He received a TESL certificate (Teaching English as a Second Language) at Seattle Pacific University and an MA degree in Linguistics with an emphasis in Syntax and Semantics, at California State University at Long Beach. He then received a PhD in Asian Languages & Cultures from the University of California at Los Angeles, and joined the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Spring of 2011. Courses Taught in the US: Teaching Asian Languages at College Level (UCLA, 2009); Beginning and Intermediate Korean (2006~2010); Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Korean (CU Boulder, Spring 2011~present). Dr. Roh's research interests include acquisition of Korean as a second language, educating Korean heritage and non-heritage students, designing and developing effective and innovative instructional contents and methods specifically focusing on the inclusion of culture. She has been an author of multiple books and Korean learning material that gained a wide audience since 2005: Dr. Roh is an author and recording studio director of speaking-oriented Korean language learning series Pimsleur Korean 1-3 which have been published both in the United States and in Japan with Simon & Schuster Publishing Company. She is also an author of popular Korean language textbooks Living Language Series: Beginning Korean (2007) and Living Language: Complete Korean (2013) with Random House Publishing Inc. Her third book Essential Korean Reader (2017) is a novice-high to intermediate level reading textbook published with Routledge Taylor & Francis Group in the U.K. Her most recent book project is Anytime Korean textbook series 1 and 2 with Yonsei University Press (2019-2020) and Contemporary Korean Reader: Cultural readings for Intermediate to Advanced Students (in 2020) with Routledge Taylor & Francis Group. In the department, Dr. Roh has developed the full 4-year college Korean language curriculum, developing 13 new courses in addition to the existing curriculum and served as Head of Korean Language Program from 2007-2015. She currently teaches Korean at all levels and mentors teachers in various capacities on campus. Professor D. Ooyoung Pyun specializes in Korean language pedagogy with particular interests in individual learner variables in second/foreign language learning and issues in inter-language pragmatics. Her publications include a book, 500 Common Korean Idioms (Routledge, 2018), an edited volume, Teaching and Learning Korean as a Foreign Language: A Collection of Empirical Studies (co-edited with Andrew S. Byon, National East Asian Languages Resource Center at the Ohio State University, 2012) and research articles in such journals as Foreign Language Annals, System, and the Canadian Modern Language Review. She serves on the editorial board of the journal,The Korean Language in America. Prof. Pyun teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Korean culture, Korean language, and Korean language pedagogy.
