Fascinated to find Quartermaster Captain Ira B Dutton. In 1883, he joined Father Damien to assist with the lepers on Molokai, then known as one of the Sandwich Islands. By then he had become an oblate at the Abbey of Gethsemene in KY and was known thereafter as Brother Joseph. Father Damien died two years after Brother Joseph arrived on Molokai. Brother Joseph carried out Father Damien's dream for the lepers and assisted Sister Marianne Cope and her nuns from New York who came to care for the women. He died of old age and is buried nest to the tomb of Father Damien. Father is now a saint of the Catholic Church, Marianne Cope is a Blessed of the church, but Brother Joseph might be the greatest of them all. Like his namesake, he worked quietly in the background, fulfilling the dreams of those he met.
