Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 Ravenna killed her husband Santino with her fava beans, following black witchcraft from the 1800's. When her husband died she was relieved and became the madam of the Red Lantern. Men started dyeing and Ravenna needed to find the culprit and put a stop to it; however the New Orleans police stepped in. Ravenna cooked her fava bean into a cake and finally found the culprit. The love of Darius and helped her and to get the HEA. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC.

Intriguing Start to a New Series! Ravenna travels from Italy to marry her husband Santino. She immediately realizes she has made a mistake, but she is trapped. Seven years later, he drops dead, leaving her with nothing. She is offered a unique proposal, to take charge of a run down brotherel in New Orleans. And take charge she does, turning into a very profitable business. When rumors start of black magic in The Red Lantern brotherel, policeman Darius is determined to investigate and prove magic is a hoax. He gets a little more than he bargains for when he meets Countess Ravenna. Talk about an unlikely pair! But when a customer is murdered one night they must work together to find the guilty party before he destroys The Red Lantern. Perhaps it will take a little bit of magic to solve the case! I received and ARC copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.

This is the first historical paranormal romance story by Jade Alters and though I usually don't read this type of stories (I prefer contemporary paranormal) this was a engaging read with very likable characters in a well written story. This story is about Countess Ravenna/Raven whose abusive husband died, found out they were broke and got a job running a ladies pleasure house called the Red Lantern. Policeman Darius is investigating the Red Lantern undercover but Raven knows he's a policeman and tries to take incriminating pictures with one of her girls but when he refuses, she does the job herself. When a customer is murdered that night and his spirit is captured in the picture, they work together to find who is treatening Ravenna. This is a standalone story and the first in a series.
