كتاب في علم اللغة والنحو، فقد أمر والي إفريقيا المعز، القزار النحوي المشهور بأن يؤلف كتابا يجمع فيه سائر الحروف وأن يقصد في تأليفه شرح الحروف الذي جاء لمعنى وأن يجري ما ألفه من ذلك على حروف المعجم، فجمع المفرق في الكتب النفيسة من هذا المعنى، فأتى كتابا غاية في الدقة والمنفعة، وقد أبطل زعم ابن هشام أنه صاحب هذه الفكرة حيث أنهما تعاصرا، ولكن القزار توفي سنة 749 بينما ابن هشام قد كتب سنة 756 فيكون هذا الكتاب أول ما ألف في موضوعه وأهمه . وجاء الكتاب محققا وعليه حواشي مهمة
