I bought this book because it was cheap, $1.26 Canadian. I can honestly give it five stars for value. I do not regret buying the book. The basic premise of the book is that a space ship with a complement of 1,000 settlers and crew are leaving earth to settle a far distant planet. The ship and settlers are beset by various life threatening situations such as asteroid strikes, failure to be revived automatically from suspended animation, sabotage, and prehistoric thinking monsters. We follow their adventures, especially those of Al Clark the chief security officer. Not all asteroid strikes are bad. One revives Al Clark, however, he does wake up with amnesia. The book is a good read with the first half being more interesting than the second half. There were a couple of paragraphs I had to reread because I failed to understand them the first time around. I finished the book in two days. In many ways the book is disappointing. There are friendly stone-age natives on the planet, but the book fails to develop any culture for them. Most of the characters and their relationships are also very thin. I also found the concept of thinking prehistoric monsters to be interesting, but the author failed to pursue this. I was expecting the beasts to be tamed and used for transport, but, alas, this did not happen. There are numerous holes in the plot, which I will not explain because it may spoil the reader’s enjoyment. One odd anomaly is that the prehistoric monsters are cold blooded, yet they do most of their hunting at night. I would buy another book by the same author, if only to see if he has improved. However, the book has to be cheap.
