About the author

Anne T. Romano, Ph.D., a graduate of Columbia and Fordham universities, is a renowned author and Professor of Sociology. She is active in literary and historical associations and has served as President of the American Italian Historical Association, Long Island Regional Chapter. Professor Romano, has published books and articles on Psychological/Sociological/Criminological issues including spouse and child abuse patterns, terrorism, drug-related homicide, and international crime patterns. Her earlier published books are based on her experiences with various social service agencies based in New York City As the result of her volunteer work with Italian organizations, she has directed her energies towards researching, collecting, preserving and popularizing materials that illuminate American Italian life. Her last publication, Distant But Loyal: Cranston’s Italian Americans traced the emigration of her paisani out of a little town called Itri in Italy, to the city of Cranston in Rhode Island. In this book, Dr. Romano turns her attention to Italian American Women Writers. Beginning with Grazia Deledda in Italy, she chronicles the journey that these writers have taken towards recognition, their different writing genres, and how the writings have evolved with social changes. Dr. Romano is a national lecturer and consultant, speaking at conferences throughout the United States and Europe. She has received numerous awards, including being named Queens Woman of Distinction by State Senator Serphin Maltese during NYS Senate’s celebration of Women’s History Month in 2005; a Citation of Honor by the Office of the President, Borough of Queens, City of New York, on the occasion of Italian Heritage and Culture Month 2009; and a special Recognition Award for dedication and service to the Italian American Community by the Columbia Associations of U.S. Customs and Affiliated Federal Agencies in 2009
