La presente traducción ha respetado el formato y el estilo del original, efectuándose tan sólo algunas modificaciones en la sintaxis y la distribución de párrafos. Se han conservado las abreviaturas y símbolos utilizados originalmente por Bell, así como la transcripción hecha por éste de los documentos originales. Las citas españolas traducidas se han sustituido por el original español; cuando este último estaba inserto en el texto (habitualmente en las notas) se ha dejado en su lugar tan sólo la correspondiente referencia; cuando faltaba, se ha buscado en las dos principales fuentes del libro, el estudio de Carvajal y los Documentos inéditos, adaptando la transcripción a los criterios utilizados por Bell.
