Sobre esse tema, a obra de James Lovelock, o criador da teoria de Gaia, é ótimo. Mas o que mais me surpreendeu foi a defesa de pontos de vista bem polêmicos, que eu nunca tinha ouvido. Alguns deles: * O conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável nem bem emplacou e já teria ficado obsoleto, por ser tarde demais. O estrago está feito. Agora mais importante que isso é mudar radicalmente o sistema econômico para podermos começar a recuperação do planeta. Entre as primeiras medidas é mudar o sistema energético, que deveria ser baseado em… * Usinas nucleares. O autor apresenta dados convincentes de que esse tipo de energia é a mais limpa e eficiente possível. O problema é o estigma associado a ela * Energia eólica? Países que já implementaram isso em larga escala estão descobrindo várias falhas dessa tecnologia. Mas o lobby das empresas que lidam com isso é forte * Agricultura orgânica? Também prejudica o planeta. O modelo como um todo da agricultura se esgotou por não haver terra o suficiente para cultivo e alimentação de todos. A solução para isso seria… * Comida sintética!!! * Ele também fala de câncer e demonstra como nosso temor é infundado, alertando que câncer é uma consequência natural (que atinge 30% de todas as pessoas) de se respirar… oxigênio! Pode parecer tudo muito chocante. Mas Lovelock é um cientista com credenciais bem respeitáveis e argumentos lúcidos. Achei que vale a pena examinar com mais atenção todos esses pontos.
