“A taut tale of ever deepening and quickening suspense.” —O, the Oprah Magazine

Explosive . . . Both a propulsive mystery and a profound examination of a mixed-race family.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

I struggled with the beginning of this book because it was moving at a slow pace. But as I continued reading, the plot became more intricate and I found it difficult to put this book down. The author provides enough details for a satisfying ending but leaves us with some questions. Albeit, I believe that the best book is the one that makes you think. I would recommend this to anyone seeking something a bit mysterious and psycological.

Everything I Never Told You: A Novel, begins at the central point of the story and works back and forth with out being confusing or losing you. Each character has a unique voice and you come to understand them and empathize with each one as they struggle with family life, racism in the 1960-70s, feminist issues, women's roles, death, and the complexities of an inter-racial marriage. What keeps you turning the pages is trying to figure out the mystery of how the star character, the 16 year old daughter wound up drowned in the lake and to see if this family can survive the deep loss of the glue that held the family together.

While it's beautifully written and filled with powerful themes,I couldn't really get into the book. The story just didn't grab me the same way Little Fires Everywhere did.
