Fighting at 25,000 feet in thin, freezing air that no warriors had ever encountered before, bomber crews battled new kinds of assaults on body and mind. Air combat was deadly but intermittent: periods of inactivity and anxiety were followed by short bursts of fire and fear. Unlike infantrymen, bomber boys slept on clean sheets, drank beer in local pubs, and danced to the swing music of Glenn Miller’s Air Force band, which toured US air bases in England. But they had a much greater chance of dying than ground soldiers.

It takes the cake for the best overview on the air war I've ever read; the first-hand accounts and anecdotes in the book are tragic, poignant, and still etched in my memory even though it's been years since I first read the book.

I heard the author speak about this book and the stories it contains on CSPAN one evening while channel surfing. It was mesmerizing. He came across as an extremely intelligent and articulate professor of the war and all its particulars. It inspired me to locate the book and discover the stories for myself which I am in the process of doing.

Amazing mindblowing I like it with all those adventures and the air men are amazing but will there be any more books or not. I totally liked the war. It shows how people worked hard and sacrificed themselves.
