Впервые напечатано в «Самарской газете» в 1896 году. В собрания сочинений автора рассказ не включался. Перу Горького принадлежат и такие произведения: « Король, который высоко держит свое знамя», «Кража», «Красота», «Крымские эскизы», «Лев Толстой».
