One Person's Opinion on Supplements This book makes broad claims in both its title and subtitle, ones I was pretty sure the author wouldn’t be able to live up to. Unfortunately, I am right. While the book certainly discusses a variety of dietary supplements—vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, probiotics, etc.—I didn't really see him make a list of supplements you need to achieve fitness or health goals or even note which supplements he thinks are key in those chapters about the different supplements. That's actually good, in my opinion, but when you promised that in your title, you certainly do set up an expectation that you will be told “the only supplements you [will] need.” I am an RN, so I have studied a fair amount about nutrition and the human body. Much of this author's commentary on both of these topics differs from what I learned in nursing school and at times flies in the face of what we scientifically know. I had a full three term-course in anatomy and physiology (plus additional courses in pathophysiology) and a one-term course in nutrition; I don't believe they steered me wrong in nursing school. So I would advise that you take whatever he says in terms of nutrition and how the body works with a grain of salt. One thing I did not like is his take on the macronutrients of the body. I tend to dislike books that demonize what are actually healthy carbs and fall prostrate at the altar of protein. Both happened in this book. The only basis for judging a carb-including food is not, as the author states, how it impacts your blood sugar! (Which, by the way, is highly individual.) Rather, I would look at a carb-heavy food from its all-around nutrition picture. If it is a natural, unprocessed fruit, vegetable, legume, or grain, it most likely has a vitamin and mineral profile that would make it a healthy choice most of the time in a balanced diet. While protein is an important macronutrient, I don't elevate its importance as often happens today and as is written about in this book. The body only needs a small amount of protein to rebuild tissues or make new ones in the typical adult body; the rest is excreted daily. The body doesn't want that much nitrogen hanging around. Of course, too, some people who have health issues must limit protein because it is taxing on the body to get rid of if you have certain conditions. Therefore, I'm a fan of eating the appropriate amount of protein, not an excess. From what I understand of the author, he comes to this book from a fitness perspective, which I actually see as quite different from looking at this information from a health perspective. The body's needs are different if you're heavily into fitness than if you are just a regular person doing the average amount and kinds of formal exercise. I read a lot of nonfiction books, and I like my nonfiction to make a promise in the title and subtitle and then fulfill that in the book proper. I do not feel that that happened in this book, even beyond what I've already mentioned. While this book is supposed to be about supplements (the “only book” and “last guide” you need), I felt like much of it was actually about diet. Of course, I would argue that you don't need supplements if you eat healthfully. But in a book that is supposed to be about supplements, diet should only be peripherally mentioned. The focus should be on supplements, like the title and subtitle say. So, in essence, what I am saying is this book is this author's opinion about what you should eat in terms of diet and supplementation based on his experience as someone who is very into fitness. If you like reading those kinds of nonfiction books, this book will be right up your alley. If you're hoping that you will find an objective look at supplementation for every body—which seems to me to be the promise of the title and subtitle—you won't find that here. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
