Chances R is a highly creative novel that tackles ultra high-tech inventions and their impact on human life and decisions. This novel has the sharp, fast-paced action of a thriller - there are action scenes that are as good as any I've read in NYT-bestselling thrillers - combined with the warmth of a main character and his everyday life that I really liked. Chances R is loaded with research into medical and computer technology that opens the reader up to philosophical and moral issues that arise when technological advancements overtake our ability to properly assess their ramifications on our society and our very humanity. This technology - AHI, artificial hybrid intelligence - presents possibilities that are at once truly frightening, yet practically irresistible in the ways it could rocket us ahead. This book gives the reader a lot to think about with respect to how technology can improve our lives in a myriad of ways, yet we run the risk of losing control when its capabilities exceed our predictions and takes us down paths we are not at all prepared for. It also presents some very intriguing possibilities for the future of medical advancement, when combined with technology. Would we recognize when we are crossing boundaries that maybe should not be crossed? Will our drive for advancement exceed our good judgment? Who is at the controls? Can we trust them to make the right decisions? Likely not. These are familiar and controversial issues and Chances R takes them and runs with it. I was very moved by the story's climax. My favorite type of novel is always one that leaves me contemplating the scenarios it presents long after the last page has been turned. Chances R is exactly that - a fascinating and completely unique story that will most certainly leave you thinking... ********
