This is my favoirite book of the series. filled with happy and sad moments. Richard, Kaylan, and Kara flee to a remote forested part of the new world hoping they would be safe from the clutches of the order. Not soon after Richars is taken hostage and forced to the old world, held so by an evil spell that would cost Kaylans life if he didnt do everything he was told. There Richard, fighting back in his own way, destroys the grasp that the order holds over it's people. With chisel and hammer Richard forges his path and defys the order at every turn. without having read any other book in the series, you could easily jump into, and be lost in this exciting novel. This is one war wizard who doesnt take anything sitting down.

With a strange melding of worldviews -communism/socialism/calvanism matched up against an atheistic capitalism - the author still manages to write a story that draws your along with anxious anticipation of the outcome. The best versions of free enterprise are still driven by people desiring to better the lives of others and the typical expressions of communism/socialism are not coupled with religion so its interesting to see how the author has smashed these disparate views into a compelling read.

This is, hands down, my favorite book of all time. Terry Goodkind is the master of this genre. He totally captivated me with 'Wizard's First Rule,' and then blew me away with this installment of the series. If you only ever read one of his books, this must be the one. Although, I highly recommend reading them all.

About the author

Terry Goodkind (1948-2020) is a #1 New York Times bestselling author. His books include the multi-volume epic fantasy Sword of Truth series -- beginning with Wizard’s First Rule, the basis for the television show Legend of the Seeker -- and related series Richard and Kahlan and The Nicci Chronicles.

Goodkind was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where he also attended art school. Alongside a career in wildlife art, he was also a cabinetmaker and a violin maker, and did restoration work on rare and exotic artifacts from around the world. In the 1990s he relocated to Nevada, where, when not writing novels, he was a racing-car enthusiast.
