Ce livre conçoit les rapports franco-maghrébins comme un exemple de rencontre bien spécifique, une mise en contact et un rapprochement délicat entre deux entités séparées par la violence de l'histoire. Il introduit les concepts de "rencontres performatives" et d'encontres entre la France et le Maghreb. Sur la base de cette conceptualisation, l'auteur revisite les relations entre ces deux pays à travers la lecture d'oeuvres de romanciers, Anouar Benmalek, Mehdi Charef, Assia Djebar, ...), de théoriciens et de cinéastes (Yamina Benguigui) dans l'espoir de produire une nouvelle lecture.
