Like so many others, I received an ARC of one of the novels in the collection — The Waking of Grey Grimm by Tony Bertauski — and am reviewing that rather than the entire collection. That said, I pre-ordered this collection shortly after it was first announced and haven't regretted that decision in the slightest. Expect more reviews to follow as I slog my way through the full set. The Waking of Grey Grimm is Tony Bertauski at his finest, exploring the impact of virtual reality on otherwise normal human minds and doing so within a gripping story that's impossible to put down. Highly Recommended.

I've read Reign of Bone and Steel, by Gwynn White and Erin St Pierre, from this set and I absolutely loved it. So much so, that I immediately started looking for a second book before I remembered that this first book just came out! While the world building was a bit thin (we really could use some beefing up in the history of why the world came to be split the way it is, the differences between the 2 cultures, why they've been at war for so long and what was the initial catalyst), the immediate areas that the characters interact were well described, so you really had no problem imagining what was going on. Caeda, as a main character was pretty good. I do love how reluctant she is to be in the spotlight, preferring to be the best she can be outside of it, recognizing that doing a really good job doesn't mean you have to be front and center of everyone. However, I do feel that she changed in a few areas a little too quickly, that did make you raise you eyebrow a few times. How she goes from vetting everyone and their pets, to not bothering with a couple of people because they're related to someone she trusts was a bit flimsy for me. And how quickly she trusted some people also bothered me a bit. I felt that Dominik's reveal of his love happened far too soon, even if he had loved her for years. In fact, I had no problem with the actual reveal itself. I love how up front he was about it, and how he left it at that with no real pressure on her for any sort of response or trying to make a relationship the front and center issue. It was more of where it was placed in the story. We didn't get a chance to have the tension build up between the two, or they even really develop some sort of foundation to really build off of. Could we have left it for the second book? I think so. It really would have been great to see them become friends and see how Caeda goes from indifferent to developing real feelings for Dominik during this first book. Really making Dominik work to actually earn Caeda's trust and more. However, these little bits shouldn't dissuade you from the rest of the story. It really was well put together, and I blew right through it, excited to see what happened next. The sword as an actual character was brilliant and I truly loved his humour! He has a hint of Gollum/Smeagol to him, and he really does make Caeda work to think out his clues and information. What parts of the world we were given were really fleshed out and you had no problem imagining or seeing where they were and what they were doing. I easily fell into the story and blew right through the book. I am genuinely excited to see what happens in the next book. I definitely recommend getting this box set. I have no doubt that I will find another fantastic book or series after how good Reign of Bone and Steel was.

3.5 stars. If you love Fantasy and SciFi this is a set of stories you have to get! Add in some diverse writers and it gets even better. The variety of authors and storylines will keep you riveted for many hours. Some violence and adult themes so 18+. You cannot go wrong with this set. There are stories for everyone included. There is a combination of short and longer stories. So far I have only read The Other by Marilyn Peake, Mind Reader by PK Tyler, and Reign of Bone and Steel by Gwynn White and Erin St. Pierre. But just those story are worth more than the cost of this set. REVIEW FOR THE OTHER: The past, present, and future come together in this short standalone story. Are they aliens or something else? I want to know more about these characters so I hope that the author writes at least one additional book about them. REVIEW FOR MIND READER (Kalamatra Rebellion #1): Mind Reader is the first book in the Kalamatra Rebellion series. This can be read as a standalone but does end in a cliffhanger for the next book. Those with power and privilege once again try to make the rest of humanity subservient to them. Can they be stopped? REVIEW FOR REIGN OF BONE AND STEEL: This can be read as a standalone but ends in a cliffhanger for the next book. Power, magic, and revenge come together for an interesting story. People and situations are not as it seems. There are enough twists and turns to keep readers interested.
