About this ebook

A heartbreaking novel about two siblings, their tumultuous home life, and the shocking relationship they form to survive it . . .

Neglected by an irresponsible, alcoholic mother, Lochan and Maya take care of their three younger siblings. Just seventeen and sixteen, they have the stressful responsibilities of parenthood. The situation has made them emotionally closer than a brother and sister usually are. And now they have fallen in love.

Their clandestine romance grows ever more intense, even as they know it has to stop. quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. Sooner or later, a secret like this one is going to turn explosive . . .

“The novel’s surprises continue to the very end, and the secondary characters are well developed, including the needy younger siblings, who are shown in all their anger, sweetness, and rebellion. Most of all, though, it’s Lochan’s and Maya’s alternating first-person, present-tense narratives, both tender and heartbreaking, that will stay with readers.” —Booklist

Well written mostly, but too much drama and so much crying. Truly a very raw story, not a bad book actually. But definitely NOT for everyone. I like books with good plots AND happy endings, this book had a decent plot but undoubtedly one of the saddest endings I've read, ever! True respect for the author for going on to write such a detailed book with such a raw display of detail and emotion on such a controversial subject.

I mean... It's definitely an amazing story. It was so incredibly realistic from the beginning, almost so realistic that it was hard for me to read. But I like happy endings. And the ending doesn't make sense... [SPOILER WARNING] [SPOILER WARNING] [SERIOUSLY, STOP READING IF YOU ARE EVEN REMOTELY INTERESTED IN READING THIS BOOK. IT'S VERY WORTH TO READ] [STOP READING, IT WILL RUIN THE BOOK] It doesn't make sense that Lochie would go and do what he did, when he and Maya could both get reduced sentences and wait a few years instead... Especially since the outcome is foster care or foster care, trauma or trauma. It's not a solution a straight-A student would've come up with, as there are many other unresolved alternatives and variables he could've considered before making such an irresponsible decision. Compounding that fact is that he didn't even get a lawyer for advice. His rash decision is complete abandonment—Not a noble decision, let alone a heroic one.
