Hak Kekayaan Intelektual (HKI) atau Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) digolongkan sebagai hak milik individual, yaitu hak kebendaan yang tidak berwujud (intangible rights). Berkaitan dengan HKI, sstilah yang digunakan di Indonesia saat ini adalah “Kekayaan Intelektual (KI).” Singkatan HKI tidak lagi dipergunakan, namun lebih mengacu pada “KI” karena mengikuti istilah yang mayoritas di terapkan di negara-negara lain.
