Pe șinele ce leagă Londra de orașele din apropiere două trenuri merg, pentru câteva secunde, în paralel. Într-unul se află o doamnă în vârstă, abia trezită din moțăială, cu gândul, încă, la bacșișul prea mare pe care i l-a dat hamalului în gară; în celălalt se află un bărbat înalt, brunet, bine făcut, care sugrumă o femeie. Șocată, doamna în vârstă vede crima, iar pe criminal numai din spate. Deși raportează imediat la poliție, toată lumea o ia drept acel gen de bătrână care, dornică de atenție, scornește povești incredibile.
Exista însă cineva care nu-i pune nici o clipă relatarea la îndoială. Este prietena ei, Miss Marple. Din fotoliul său, aceasta dirijează investigațiile către un conac englezesc rupt direct din istorie, neatins de modernitate, unde, într-un hambar nefolosit, se află un cadavru într-un sarcofag...
