La novela narra las costumbres, vida familiar y social, y trabajos en el campo, en la República de la Nueva Granada, actual Colombia, durante la Guerra Civil de 1854, desatada por el golpe de Estado del general José María Melo, cuando el liberalismo se sumió en una profunda división. Tiene como escenario las haciendas de la Sabana de Bogotá y sus alrededores. El rejo de enlazar, es, junto con Manuela, una de las obras costumbristas de Díaz Castro que tiene gran valor documental, como testimonio de los usos y vida cotidiana del siglo XIX.
