L'Aulularia è un'opera ben rappresentativa dell'arte di Plauto. In essa, infatti, vi si trovano tutti gli espedienti abituali del poeta: la beffa, l'equivoco, la sorpresa, e l'insulto, l'invettiva, la frenesia dei ritmi e dei suoni. Al di là di questi motivi di interesse specifico, la commedia sta poi con grande rilievo nella più ampia storia del teatro per l'indicazione, se non la definizione, di una figura comica fortunatissima; per le molte commedie che dopo di sé ha generato, e fra esse almeno un capolavoro assoluto: l'Avare di Molière.
