《文匯報》創辦於1938年。1949年新中國成立之前兩度因政治原因而停刊。中共建政以後，《文匯報》仍保持「民間報紙」的色彩，被視為一份知識分子的報紙，得到毛澤東的重視。毛澤東經常把《文匯報》上發表的報道、社論、文章、調查報告等，順手拈來寫上批語，在全國範圍內製造出一個個政治宣傳攻勢。1957年7月，毛澤東發表重頭文章〈《文匯報》的資產階級方向應當批判〉，為反右運動掀起波瀾；1965年11月，《文匯報》發表了姚文元的〈評新編歷史劇《海瑞罷官》〉，拉開了文化大革命的序幕，都可看到這份報紙與政治的關係。 本書從報史的角度，記錄了1949–1976年間毛澤東、《文匯報》、知識分子和多宗重大歷史事件的關係，以及各派知識分子被操控、被改造時的不同反應，既可見到國家政權在意識形態層面的諸多運作方式，也可見到徐鑄成、浦熙修、欽本立等一代文匯報人的風骨。
