Before King David was king, he was a shepherd...; since the author tended sheep too, he understands & explains the shepherding-meaning behind all the declarations King David made in Psalm 23, i.e. "He anoints my head with oil..." takes on a whole new meaning when you read that sheep can be plagued by parasites and flies that can bore into the mucous lining of their noses and ears to lay eggs...drives the sheep mad, to the point where they'll run to get away from them and could abort their lambs from chronically bolting...so a good shepherd will anoint each of his sheep's head, as the oil repels the flies...correlating how God anoints us with His Spirit for the same reason, to prevent His own from being driven mad by the things that bug us. Of course, the author does a MUCH better job at relaying these truths than I do... :)

I have been reciting this Psalm for many years. Now it has a whole new impact on me. I understand the meaning of the phrases like never before. Don't let this one get away without reading it.

The Best description of Psalm 23 I have ever read based on the experience of a real shepherd of a flock that makes the passages alive in each line with its metaphor. Illuminating in its deep insight on the relationship with Jesus, the good shepherd to His flock. Beautiful worth reading!

W. Phillip Keller, born in East Africa, always loved wildlife and the outdoors. Having spent many years in agriculture research, land management, and ranch development in British Columbia, he later pursued careers in conservation, wildlife photography, and journalism. His experiences as a shepherd equipped him with the insights that are the basis for A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.
