An entertaining read, one that kept me glued to my Kindle, Chemistry of Magic has all the elements of a good story. From the opening pages when Emilia proposes marriage to the dying Lord Dare, I was hooked. Despite being complete strangers, Dare and Emilia have more in common than they first realise and as the marriage progresses Dare finds that he cannot help but admire his new wife and respect her abilities. There was some intrigue and a mystery to be solved, but mostly I was overwhelmed by the thought that the scientists of the 19th century literally took their lives in their hands experimenting to find cures and the causes of disease. The battle between what is now known as "conventional medicine" and the more natural herbal remedies still rages, however there was a time when scientific methods were anything but conventional. I loved the dialogue between Dare and Emilia which was filled with wit and humour, and the situations they found themselves in were also extraordinary. It was a serendipitous match, one that resulted in both parties embarking on a new road of discovery. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
