Eigentlich war der 1922 erschienene Roman eine Satire, die sich mit dem einfältigen Antisemitismus jener Zeit auseinander setzte. Andererseits gelang Bettauer in diesem Roman eine düstere Zukunftsvision. Der Roman wurde 1924 verfilmt und in Wien uraufgeführt. Bettauer wurde nur kurze Zeit nach der Uraufführung von einem NSDAP-Mitglied ermordet.
