About this ebook

Now a USA Today bestseller

From the bestselling author that brought you the award-winning Extinction Cycle series, comes an all new vision of the apocalypse and the future of humanity.

More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search for a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers: men and women who risk their lives by diving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

When one of the remaining airships is damaged in an electrical storm, a Hell Diver team is deployed to a hostile zone called Hades. But there’s something down there that’s far worse than the mutated creatures discovered on dives in the past—something that threatens the fragile future of humanity.

"In Hell Divers, Nicholas Sansbury Smith unleashes post-apocalyptic science-fiction with the pacing of a thriller. He achieves his world-building succinctly, and moves from thrills to chills without the story becoming a mere catalogue of violence, along with tender moments that round out the characters. Hell Divers offers genre fans everything they could ask for, from fresh takes on the post-apocalypse to social commentary reminiscent of Snowpiercer, and plenty of action. The book's swift, tight plotting will also appeal to thriller fans, with a cliffhanger ending that leaves readers suspended mid-air for the rest of a promised trilogy."— Shelf Awareness

This book is an interesting one, and it is definitely not for everybody, but with that said it does offer something good. The book does something special, and the author has a very interesting vison for the world he creates. He manages to hold on to the reader, even though he does take a some wild, creative freedom in this world. This is also why it ends on 4 of 5, but if you are able to see past a few minor details, and a - sometimes - repetitive language then this book offers something good in return.

I got about three-quarters of the way through this. It's not bad as action-oriented pulpy fiction goes. It's fairly one-dimensional, you're not going to get lost in the plot, but the difficulty I had and the reason I stopped reading was the careless nature of the writing - room heaters and fans don't work when the power is out; people who have lived for 250 years on an airship above a posioned earth don't have 'energy bars' to dole out to divers - and so on, there are umpteen examples of this hasty approach and when you start to notice, it wrecks immersion. If tha t kind of thing doesn't bother you, give it a go, you might like it...

Enjoyed the writing style although the "science" part of this science fiction novel was very flaky and kept having me jump out of the story when stuff would get crazy.
