See review of "Wilkie Collins and Women,"--years ago someone told me to read this as it was the basis of the genre of detective fiction. Finally got around to it. It isn't a slog to read--actually has suspense and I was curious about how he was going to pull this all together--which was in a fairy tale like ending: Huge mystery is solved, Prince and Princess discover they really are in love, even though they hated each other's guts 15 minutes before. Princess needs someone around to manage her vast fortune--otherwise she is the helpless prey of men. There are good men (Prince) and bad men (others)--and since she can't tie her shoes without help, it is helpful that her good heart assures that Prince will find her in the end and they will marry and live happily ever after. If it is possible to be happy when one is married to a woman as dumb as a post. And vice versa.
