Glaube und Zweifel wurden theologisch lange Zeit als sich ausschließende Gegensätze betrachtet. Dahinter steht die Auffassung des Glaubens im Sinne eines Für-wahr-Haltens. Glaube ist aber ein existentieller Akt, der zum Menschen als solchem immer schon dazu gehört. Damit gewinnt der Zweifel aber auch eine positive Bedeutung, bewahrt er den Menschen doch letztlich davor, fundamentalistisch und fanatisch zu werden. Es gilt somit, dieses "Dilemma des Menschseins" (J. Ratzinger) auszuhalten. Das ist Thema der vier Beiträge des Bandes. Werner Schüßler verdeutlicht es anhand des Glaubensverständnisses von Karl Jaspers, Peter Wust und Paul Tillich. Hans-Georg Gradl zeigt, dass auch im Neuen Testament der Zweifel vorkommt : bei den Jüngern, bei Paulus, bei Thomas. Johannes Schelhas führt aus, wie sehr der Zweifel den christlichen Glauben sowohl anstachelt als auch lähmt. Und Mirijam Schaeidt geht der Frage nach, welche Rolle Zweifel im spirituellen Leben spielen.
