本書論叢裡的16篇論文，是作者長年在大學的教學與研究，講授有關經濟學、經濟思想史、文化創意產業、臺灣政經與兩岸發展、臺灣治安史等課程的部分內容；也是作者藉由國內外研討會、演講和刊物所發表的論文集。
書裡選錄的內容主要聚焦在臺灣政治經濟思想史的結構與變遷，論述臺灣歷經原住民、荷蘭西班牙、明清、日本殖民，和中華民國等不同體制時期的政權統治，在政經結構與發展變遷的過程中，其所呈現不同歷史階段的面貌，尤其受到兩岸關係發展的影響。
