About this ebook

A chance at freedom from zombies forces an American nurse and her family to consider a deadly journey in this horrifying sequel to The Highway.

When the world ends, what will you fight for?

As the zombie apocalypse rages on, Cali and her family find refuge in Idaho...but it’s not enough. She knows the ugly truth: hand-to-mouth, hard-scrabble “survival” is just slow suicide. If they hope to live, really live, her family, her friends, her community must thrive.

At first a small town in Montana, hundreds of miles away, looks like the answer. Then Cali receives a message of hope from an unlikely source, telling them about Ireland: a safe zone, free from the undead. She and her allies must make an impossible decision: do they risk their lives crossing the country—and the Atlantic Ocean—to reach a zombie-free home, or do they stay put and make the best with what they have?

With the undead attacking from every side...how far will they go to feel truly alive once more?

In a refreshingly strong, yet entirely feminine voice, Julie Rudolph concentrates her apocalyptic adventure series on the quest to restore the notion of "home." Her trilogy is authentic in ways many end-of-days works neglect. How do you keep your children human, moral, happy? What value do our elders have when time, speed, and strength are paramount to survival? What constitutes a "necessary sacrifice," and what part of ourselves must we be willing to leave behind for the sake of others? What I appreciated most in this series was Rudolph's willingness to think past the shock value and gore (though there are some very intense passages) of many zombie novels to consider in depth the real fears and burdens we would all suffer. She is able to work out detailed, reasonable measures you or I would take to solve issues that rarely come up in the genre. Although Rudolph believes we can survive as a race, she also understands why many would chose to not continue; these are some of the most meaningful and well written pages. She makes a wonderful case for honoring those who decide to check out, regardless of where that leaves the group. The Reanimates series is a smooth, thought provoking read, a great blend of horror and realism.

About the author

J. Rudolph is the author of the zombie series The Reanimates, and the young adult paranormal mystery, Hadley's Haunting. Born in 1977, she resides in Southern California with her husband, son, two turtles (who she claims owns all rights to her house and allow the people to live there, only since they can open the food jars) and her maniacal bird (who seems to have developed a taste for flesh in its lifetime). As a nurse with over fifteen years of experience, she often incorporates an element of medical training in her stories, offering authenticity to her medically minded characters. She also offers authenticity to her zombie series-- she calls herself a living dead girl ever since her spinal reconstruction .
