Captain Matthew West is just back from the war and missing the life of adventure, so he answers a vaguely worded personal ad and finds himself at a dinner party being introduced as the fiancé of the lovely heiress, Natalie Coolidge. Miss Coolidge explains that she has employed West to help unravel the puzzle of a woman who has apparently been impersonating her, but when Natalie disappears briefly and returns with a changed personality, the good Captain fails to draw the obvious conclusion, and while trying to understand the change is repeatedly captured by a gang of hoodlums with which the new Miss Coolidge seems to be in league.
