About this ebook

Serena knows a few simple things. She will always be owned by a warlock. She will never have freedom. She will always do what her warlock wishes, regardless of how inane, frivolous, or cruel it is. And if she doesn’t follow the rules, she will be tarnished. Spelled to be bald, inked, and barren for the rest of her life—worth less than the shadow she casts.

Then her ownership is won by a barbarian from another country. With the uncertainty that comes from belonging to a new warlock, Serena questions if being tarnished is really worse than being owned by a barbarian, and tempts fate by breaking the rules. When he looks the other way instead of punishing her, she discovers a new world. The more she ventures into the forbidden, the more she learns of love and a freedom just out of reach. Serena longs for both. But in a society where women are only ever property, hoping for more could be deadly.

This is not the type of book I would typically read, but I downloaded it on a whim and was immediately drawn into the story. The world these women lived in is hard to take. The author really developed this world into something unique and quite enthralling... even when it made me sick to think about the difficulties faced by the characters. I highly recommend this book, but make sure you have plenty of time once you start it because it is a real page turner.

This is a good ebook. It emphasize on the poor situation of the women in the fantasy world of warlocks, though you may find many countries in the real world that have somewhat similar issues. I wanted it to be a bit more romantic as the title suggests. We got to see this unjust world with the eyes of the girl, Serena. If you want to read something less romantic and more focused on a fantasy realm, then this is for you.

The writing is exceptional, the plot is compelling and the pacing is perfect. The suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat and turning pages, yet the secrets are revealed with perfect timing. The characters and situations are both relatable and believable. In fact, some were so believable, it made it hard to read at times. Knowing that those same situations still occur in some cultures outside of fiction can be hard to swallow for some, including me. I highly recommend this and look forward to the next.
