宗教学者。上智大学グリーフケア研究所客員所員。大正大学客員教授。東京大学名誉教授。ＮＰＯ法人東京自由大学学長。日本宗教学会元会長。
１９４８年、東京都生まれ。東京大学文学部宗教学・宗教史学科卒業。同大学大学院人文科学研究科博士課程単位取得退学。主な研究領域は、近代日本宗教史、宗教理論、死生学。
著書に『宗教学の名著３０』『新宗教を問う』（以上、ちくま新書）、『国家神道と日本人』（岩波新書）、『神聖天皇のゆくえ』（筑摩書房）、『戦後日本と国家神道』（岩波書店）などがある。
