About this ebook

From the depths of catastrophe, a glimmer of hope

After the capture of Coruscant, the mighty heart of the New Republic, a stunned galaxy fears that nothing can stop the Yuuzhan Vong. Still, that crushing defeat produces one small miracle: Jacen Solo is alive. Yet he can scarcely imagine himself in stranger circumstances.

The young Jedi Knight is in the care of Vergere, a fascinating creature of mystery and power, her intentions hard to fathom, her cruelties rarely concealed. But this master of inscrutable arts has much to teach the young Jedi . . . for she holds the key to a new way to experience the Force, to take it to another level—dangerous, dazzling, perhaps deadly.

In the wrong hands, the tremendous energies of the Force can be devastating. And there are others watching Jacen’s process closely, waiting patiently for the moment when he will be ready for their own dire purposes. Now, all is in shadows. Yet whatever happens, whether Jacen’s newfound mastery unleashes light or darkness, he will never be the same Jedi again. . . .

Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years!

This is one of the best books I've read in the star wars universe and one of my favorites in general. It adds a lot of new elements and depth. Like the Darth Bane trilogy, it really pushed the sith/Jedi ideologies beyond good and evil in a thought provoking way. It's very dark and I know a lot of people don't like SW getting to that, but it's really a big push in growing the franchise in my opinion.

The writing is at times astonishingly well suited to the zenlike content of Jacen's journey to new places in the Force. There is a balance, symmetry and rejection of false dichotomies (like form and content?) at work in both the narrative and its expression. I expected another entertaining read in a great story arc, but I was surprised with profundity, an expanding conception of the Force that is not dualistic. I will definitely be checking out the author's other fiction.

Didn't much care for the writing style. He seems to make things overly complicated, tries to be too deep
