Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770 – 1843) è stato un importante poeta tedesco, ma ha scritto anche un romanzo epistolare (Iperione) e una tragedia (La morte di Empedocle). Nelle sue liriche, di altissimo valore, cantò l'amata Diotima, ma soprattutto mirò a esprimere ineffabile e spesso angosciante presenza del divino e a delineare una palingenesi della storia umana capace di armonizzare tempi e luoghi remoti, la Grecia classica e il futuro.
