Since Jeff and Mike Shaara introduced the historical novel from the perspective of the participants, reading about these events has provided a greater realism. It takes much research about the characters to be able to approximate their words and thoughts in order to achieve a level of credibility. Lt Colonel Peters efforts have succeeded. His depiction of soldiers in the dire situation of combat provide a realism to the battle. After reading Cain at Gettysburg, I look forward to his next book.
