Also puts the lie to the claim that the British government was seriously opposed to (and warned) the apartheid government in South Africa to mend its ways during the 1950s, culminating in their expulsion from the Commonwealth. -The truth is that the public British statements were just another PR exercise to add to the many so well covered in Elkins' book. The British handling of the MauMau situation was a massive de facto green light to South Africa to continue its intensification of the apartheid system!

About the author
Caroline Elkins is an assistant professor of history at Harvard University. Conversant in Swahili and some Kikuyu, she has spent nearly a decade traveling and working in rural Africa. She and her research were the subjects of a 2002 BBC documentary entitled Kenya:White Terror. Imperial Reckoning is her first book. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
