I first read the Tripods series when I was around six years old. I loved the books, and they sparked a lifelong interest in science fiction, but I haven't read them in ages. I just finished the White Mountains for the first time as an adult, and I'm reasonably happy with how it held up. Its not perfect, and I was surprised at the near total absence of female characters (something that I guess didn't occur to me at six), but it was a fun, quick read.

The White Mountains by John Christopher is THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ! At first I didn't think I would like it but the second I read it I could not believe what I read! Just totally and completely AWESOME! I tore up the school library just looking for the next book and I found out that they had the entire Tripod series!!! OMG I would have just screamed I was so happy! ---The book is just AWESOME you got to read it NOW! STOP WHAT YOUR DOING AND BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT UNTIL YOUR EYES FALL OUT! Loved the book as a kid; recently re-read it. Very enjoyable. Great for the young teen boy, I'd say.

John Christopher was the pseudonym of Samuel Youd, who was born in Lancashire, England, in 1922. He was the author of more than fifty novels and novellas, as well as numerous short stories. His most famous books include The Death of Grass, the Tripods trilogy, The Lotus Caves, and The Guardians.
