تستعرض هذه القصة ذات الطابع الخاص تجربة نفسية للكاتب، وهو يرى أنه كان لابد أن تكتب في يوم من الأيام سواء كانت واقعية أم من صنع الخيال. وهي قصة أقل ما يمكن أن يقال فيها: إنها لابد أن تحدث، أو إنها قابلة للحدوث، و«سارة» الشخصية الرئيسية موصوفة في صفحات القصة بأنها متفتحة، تحسن اللغات غير العربية، ويحار القارئ في أن يتبين إن كانت أجنبية أم إسرائيلية؟ والقصة تتناول العلاقة ما بينها وبين الكاتب والتي استمرت سنواتٍ عانى خلالها من الشك في وفائها له، وهو يصور أفاعيل ذلك الشك في نفسه على نحو فلسفي يلمس أغوار النفس البشرية بأسلوب عميق تميز به ذلك الكاتب الفذ بين مؤلفي الأدب العربي، بل والأدب العالمي.
