The scenes he presents range from the simplest and most prosaic to the surreal and fantastic, but Jacob Dix's rich, intense language makes each a fascinating pleasure. Even the shortest stories, just a couple of pages, pack a punch that make me pause and absorb them for a minute before I eagerly move on to the next. His longer ode to Coleridge, "The Keeper of Xanadu," is both beautiful and startling, confounding expectations whether or not one is familiar with the original "Kubla Khan." Dix's sweetly sad finale, "An Open Letter to Canton Village," will linger gently with you, and make you wish for the next volume. I'm happy to recommend this one!
